Rodrigo Sanchez, Monteblanco Geisha



This coffee came to us in an uncommon way.  On our trip to Colombia near the end of 2018 we stayed with farmer Rodrigo Sanchez for three days in Pitalito.  Rodrigo and his family owns four farms in the Huila region.  Though it is a solid hour and a half drive from Pitalito on some gnarly dirt roads and sits up around 1950 masl, Monteblanco is one of our favorite farms. 
In the past we have purchased a few single varietal coffees from the Monteblanco farm, but on this trip we were only going there to learn more about their processes and techniques.  While touring the farm and listening to great stories from Rodrigo in the rain, we happened across some small 3ft tall coffee trees, and he mentioned it was their first crop of Geisha.  None of it was ready to sample yet but we were able to taste some raw seeds straight from the tree, and they were incredibly sweeter than other varietals we were tasting.
The next day I asked him about the Monteblanco Geisha and he thought he may have 15-25kg this year as the first harvest.  Immediately we requested to purchase as much of that harvest as possible despite not tasting a roasted sample.  This is not really the smartest thing to do as a coffee buyer, but we believed in Rodrigo’s practices. It turned out to be one of the best coffees we have had in quite some time.  The Monteblanco Geisha is extremely complex, effervescent, floral and slightly juicy.

This is considered a relationship coffee for us, meaning we have visited the farm, have established communication and purchase coffee every year.  We purchased this coffee in conjunction with Ally Coffee Trading and paid $16/lb and purchased a total of 100 pounds from Rodrigo.  We score this coffee at 90/91 points, and this is the second year of us working with Rodrigo.
