Cold brew city fest 2017 San Diego

Cold Brew City San Diego 2017

This past weekend was the second annual San Diego cold brew competition or "Cold Brew City Fest 2017".  It took place at the Brick in Liberty Station and was hosted by the lovely people of the San Diego coffee network.

There were two categories to be entered classic and signature, we went ahead and entered both.  Not really being 'into' cold brew at Steady State we proceeded with our traditional competition style of waiting until the last minute.

For the classic competition, which was limited to just coffee and water, we flash brewed our Panama, Finca Santa Teresa, Geisha.  Yes, we flash brewed for the cold brew competition.  Our flash brews come out very juicy and tea like and have many more layers of tasting than most cold brews.

We got a little crazy with the signature entry because why not.  We started with our Ethiopian Kambaata, then head Chef Andrew Bachelier of Campfire restaurant cold smoked the ground coffee with cherry wood.  It was then cold brewed (in the firdge because you know last minute stuff) via full immersion style.  The result was a super tasty, layered cold brew.

We were close to submitting the smokes cold brew as it was, but since we're having a cold brew competition in the middle of December, we decided to make a festive holiday drink, Smoking Indian.  Its a play on our everyday ginger spiced chai, the Indian Summer, and is complete with fresh juiced ginger, cardamom, star anise, clove, cinnamon, and honey.

The event had a good vibe with records spinning and a good amount of vendors and other local artists to talk to.  Being the only North County person, again, I spent most of my time between the cocktail bar at Moniker and talking to my buddies at Hawthorne coffee, Public Square coffee, and Jeff Courson who was in town to judge the event.

We ended up winning the signature beverage competition with our Smoking Indian coming in with 43 votes from all of the audience members.  Not sure how well we did in the classic drink, which after talking to the judges was pretty hard to judge, but Bird Rock coffee roasters came out on top with an impressively high score.

Its pretty humbling to be able to share the cold brew titles with another company like Bird Rock.  Its also great to keep representing North County coffee in all the local competitions!  Thanks again to the event organizers Pablo Lara, Kat Adams, Itzel Islas, Matt Eaton and all the other volunteers.

Ryan Lamb of San Diego beverage times wrote a nice little article, with a little more detail about cold brew city here

Off the top of my head good to see all these vendors that were there...
